Lobster & Seal Watching Tours

puffin cruise bar harbor

The Project Puffin Visitor Center in Rockland is a great place for people of all ages to learn about the puffin and experience hands-on exhibits. The small, photogenic birds have a black back and head, white belly, orange legs and feet, a white face and a stout but powerful beak outlined in orange. Their white face and small black eyes give them the look of a clown with wings. View and learn about the marvelous creatures we are seeing on our recent tours. The lighthouse was originally built in 1817 as a small stone lighthouse.

Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company

Our captains, crews and naturalists are expertly trained and promote responsible whale watching and conservation efforts on our Bar Harbor tours. Some of the wildlife we will be seeking are whales, Atlantic puffins, pelagic birds, ocean sunfish, seals, dolphins, sharks, and more. The history of puffins on Maine islands is complicated. In the past, these birds populated the coastal areas of Maine, but by the early 1900s, there were no puffins spotted on the islands besides a single pair of puffins on Matinicus Rock. After the implementation of the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which banned the killing of wild birds in the US, puffins slowly returned to Matinicur Rock.

There was one small group left when we visited as the majority had already begun their travels down South for the winter months. Other than the Puffins, the island is also home to razorbills, guillemonts, and Arctic terns. Binoculars and/or a long zoom lens are strongly recommended for closer views, however they are not required to see puffins. This special cruise is designed for the nature lover that wants it all in just one afternoon! Cruise aboard the Harbor Princess, Mid Coast Maine’s largest and fastest vessel!

One of Bar Harbor’s most popular wildlife and sightseeing cruises!

Our Bar Harbor cruises are clean and family-oriented and the Acadian & Eden Star are pet-friendly! The boats offer a small snack bar, restrooms, and the large boats also have a heated, indoor cabin. However, please bring a warm jacket or sweater with you on all of our cruises, as temperatures on the water are cooler than they are on shore. Both were so gracious, clearly caring about everyone's comfort and involvement. The knowledge that both shared regarding the local seas, lobsters, crabs, seals, and landmarks was very interesting and informative.

Maine Tour Boats

Powered by brand new, green, clean burning tier 3 diesel engines. This area is also home to the Atlantic Puffin - previously know as the Common Puffin. This pigeon-sized seabird actually lives on the open ocean during the majority of the year. Puffins swim underwater, using their wings to propel them through the water, while their feet act as a ruder. Puffins do not live on the land other than during the breeding season.

We have naturalists who will keep you informed about the wildlife we are seeing and are happy to answer any questions you may have. The crew was fantastic and went out of their way to find whales. Head offshore in search of whales while your guide educates you about the whales and other species of the Gulf of Maine. Binoculars are also helpful for viewing other wildlife such as seals and eagles.

On a whale watching tour, you will be able to see these and possibly be able to view various species of sharks and Giant Tuna. There are all kinds of incredible creatures to encounter while cruising the area. Cap’n Fish’s Cruises provides premier whale watching tours and wildlife cruises departing from Boothbay Harbor, Maine. We serve the Camden, Rockland and Freeport areas and are located just an hour North of Portland. However, like all wildlife, puffins move around all of the time and follow their own migration patterns.

PUFFIN WATCH WITH NATIONAL AUDUBON

I would recommend taking this tour or another similar tour to get this unique view of Bar Harbor. After the Winter Harbor Light we continued on past the Porcupine Islands and a protected Osprey Nest. The ride back towards Bar Harbor was filled with more great scenery and wild life. We were delighted to watch more families of Harbor Porpoise’s flying through the water. Egg Rock Light sits on a 12.5 acre island that is part of the Maine Costal Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Puffin Watching

Set sail aboard the 40′ Tricia Clark, Maine’s original puffin boat. This is a two hour tour out of Pigeon Hill Bay to the stunning Petit Manan Island. During this tour, you will also experience the breathtaking views of the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge and Bois Bubert Island. After the tour, we recommend hiking the boreal forest trails of Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge. This will give you a beautiful view of Petit Manan Island from ashore. We were able to see many harbor seals sunbathing on the rocks or taking a dip in the harbor water.

The lighthouse sits on Petit Manan island, another Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge island. Petit Manan Island is the last of a series of ledges extending out from Petit Manan Point. Our 56’ vessel has ample bench seating and an open bow for photography and wildlife viewing opportunities.

This company operates out of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, just a few minutes away from the small town of Southport! Cap’n Fish’s Audubon Puffin Cruise was the first in the region and remains one of the most popular. A cruise aboard one of their boats is narrated by a certified marine biologist, so prepare for an educational journey. A plus of cruising with this company is that the boats used are environmentally-friendly! Cap’n Fish’s company also offers whale watching, which is one of the best things to do in Maine this April. During our adventure we saw seals, the infamous puffins, bald eagles along with many other critters as well.

Join us on this one of a kind cruise dedicated to off-shore birding! The fall excursion gives a chance at some very sought after pelagic species, such as the Great Skua. The light is a conical granite tower, standing at 119 feet tall, making this the second tallest lighthouse in Maine.
